Welcome to Industrial Paradigm, a research consultancy seeking to meet ongoing and new challenges, such as competing with China, addressing the climate crisis and the growth artificial intelligence, in a way that creates and maintains meaningful jobs. This is essential if we want an ‘economics of the common good’, delivering a more equal and sustainable society.
An industrial strategy is an intervention in the economy, against market signals, designed for a particular outcome, like economic growth, higher productivity … or good work. When we think of technologies like robots, or artificial intelligence, we immediately fear that these will replace our jobs, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Countries as diverse as Germany and China have directed their industrial strategies towards good work. We can do that too. Governments can make different choices. So can companies. My work shows you how.
I offer expert economic consultancy services to companies, trade unions, union federations, local authorities and public sector organisations, tailored to manage complex change in an inclusive way.
Change works best when companies and their employees develop a common agenda. My workshops bring the organisation and its workforce together to seek innovative change and higher productivity, while creating and preserving meaningful work.
I offer bespoke research into industrial strategies. Desk research covering what we know so far is supplemented by semi-structured interviews with company managers, trade union officials and other workforce representatives and, depending on the issue, government officials, academics and other economic stakeholders. New insights are ‘co-created’ between my interviewees and myself. Best practice examples and recommendations are identified so that meaningful change can happen.
I provide keynote presentations, designed to inform and educate - and occasionally to provoke and disrupt - government, company and union thinking about how to make economic change work. I keep up-to-date with the latest research from universities and think tanks, but my presentations are designed to be practical and outcome-focused.
I spent 16 years researching and developing industrial policies for the trade union movement. My work looked at best practice from countries as diverse as France, Germany, Denmark, China and South Korea.
In recent years, I have worked in local economic development, producing strategies to support successful companies and good jobs at the sub-regional level. While doing so, I synthesised my knowledge and understanding of industrial policies into a PhD thesis. My work builds on the latest thinking, but is practical and outcome-focused.
